That's a huge increase over the 228 hp and 258 lb-ft offered in the outgoing models, and Mini says it's enough to get the John Cooper Works Clubman to 62 miles per hour in 4.9 seconds, while the Countryman does the deed in 5.1 seconds. Note the John Cooper Works badge on the right. For instance, there's a reinforced crankshaft, a main bearing with an extended cross-section, specific pistons and connecting rods, redeveloped air intake duct, as well as a new vibration damper.

What you end up with is an engine that churns out 306 PS (302 hp) between 5,000 and 6,250 rpm and 450 Nm of torque between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm, which represents an improvement of 75 PS (74 hp) and 100 Nm over the previous JCW power unit used in both cars. The top speed also climbs to an electronically limited 155 miles per hour (250 km/h). To add context, the Clubman John Cooper Works is a full second and a half quicker to 60 miles per hour than its predecessor thanks in part to an engine that offers 73 extra horsepower.

There's even a dedicated external transmission oil cooler for the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, which is now the only gearbox available for these JCW models - the previously available six-speed manual has been omitted (boo). A new mechanical differential lock has also been drafted in to keep the power in check, calibrated with the stability control system to ensure better traction on poor surfaces or in bad weather. Adaptive dampers are optional, with both the standard and adaptive chassis able to be lowered by 10mm optionally.

Both the Clubman and Countryman JCW feature ALL4 four-wheel drive as standard, as before.

Red contrast stitching highlights the steering wheel and bucket seats.

An uprated John Cooper Works brake system incorporating larger discs and four-pot callipers aft has been fitted to bring these models to a halt, while a new exhaust system lends some aural drama.
