Fernando Alonso crashed his vehicle during the practice session ahead of the Indy 500 race, which is set to take place on May 26. He then spun into the interior wall before sliding back out to the exterior and coming to rest.

Alonso was able to climb out of the vehicle himself, and he was evaluated and cleared by the infield medical center, according to IndyCar.

McLaren have set up a new team to run Alonso at the prestigious Indy 500 this year as he seeks to become only the second man in history to complete motorsport's unofficial "triple crown", which also includes the Monaco Grand Prix and Le Mans 24 Hours, both of which he has already won.

He felt like he was making good progress with the auto prior to the crash.

"I was running a bit close to another auto and suddenly mid-corner I lost completely the front grip". The wall came too close and too quickly.

"I'm disappointed and sad for the team and for the guys", Alonso said.

The McLaren team has not made a decision as of yet whether they will fix their primary auto or switch to a backup vehicle for the remainder of the month.

Now, McLaren must decide if it will attempt to rebuild its vehicle or use the backup built by technical partner Carlin. "I was running a bit close to another vehicle and suddenly mid-corner, I completely lost the front grip".

"I think it was just pure understeer that I didn't expect", he noted.

"It felt much better than yesterday". I'm sorry for the team, but we will learn, and hopefully we will come back stronger tomorrow. "I tried to lift off and avoid the wall". "Definitely, we were moving in the right direction", Alonso noted.

Despite the setback, Alonso remained calm as he looked ahead toward the task of getting ready to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 on Saturday. The No. 66 Dallara-Chevrolet slowly skidded back up the track and made light left-front contact with the SAFER barrier (video of the crash is available here or by watching above). "Fortunately, it happened today".
