Over 830 measles cases confirmed in United States of America in '19

As of Monday, New York City alone reports 498 cases, with 34 people hospitalized, since the outbreak began last September.

Up to 75 fresh cases were recorded in the week ending May 10, out of which 41 were confirmed in New York City and 25 in nearby Rockland County.

Public health officials blame the measles resurgence on the spread of misinformation about vaccines.

In Washington, meanwhile, an outbreak that was centered in Clark County and sickened more than 70 people - a lot of them young children who were unvaccinated - was declared over late last month. A vocal fringe of parents oppose vaccines, believing, contrary to scientific studies, that ingredients in them can cause autism. "That's been the history of measles since we developed the vaccine".

Sarkar said while it's good that Florida doesn't allow philosophical exemptions from vaccines like some other states do, it still allows religious exemptions, which can also factor into higher risk levels. As of May 10, the CDC says 23 states had seen individual cases of measles this year, and several are now experiencing outbreaks: New Jersey, Michigan, Georgia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, as well as Butte, Los Angeles and Sacramento counties in California.

Although the virus was eliminated from the country in 2000, meaning it was no longer continually present year round, outbreaks still happen via travelers coming from countries where measles is still common, the CDC says. CDC noted that primary symptoms of the highly infectious disease included fever, runny nose, cough, and a rash that can spread across the entire body. That pattern continued last week, with most of the 75 new cases coming from NY.

The Florida Department of Health urges all residents to get at least one dose of the MMR vaccine, and recommends global travelers, health workers and people with weakened immune systems get an additional dose.
