The 37-year-old Federer last played in the Italian Open in 2016 and he was defeated by Dominic Thiem in the third round.

Kyrgios was scheduled to play his second round clash with Norwegian qualifier Casper Ruud but could only sit and wait, along with leading seeds including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal who are yet to play their opening matches after first-round byes. So not much to say except maybe one situation where I thought maybe was unnecessary to get warning two points in a row and it was an important moment in the match.

The fan anger over ticket prices being doubled after Roger Federer announced he'd be playing at the Italian Open just worsened.

They later told disappointed Wednesday ticket holders to come back for free on Thursday, before appearing to open the door for refunds to those who could not make it.

Federer was going to open the programme at center court against Portuguese Joao Sousa but heavy rains, which are expected to continue until night, delayed the match.

When informed of the ticket debacle on Tuesday during a media event, Federer did not seem particularly impressed.

"Look, I just really hope it doesn't take away the fact I'm really happy to be here".

"I'm pumped up to play well".

Rafael Nadal's clash with Jeremy Chardy would have followed Federer's match but the day session was finally scrapped almost eight hours after play was scheduled to begin. "I mean, my excitement couldn't be bigger".

"I have other problems first getting there", said Federer, who could meet the Spaniard in the semi-finals. He has never won this title before but has made it to the finals thrice.

"I think it's going to be a good season".

"There is a bit of a new wave coming through with the one-handed backhand that can counter some of Rafa's spins and lefty play".

Roger Federer returns to the ATP Masters 1000 at Rome after a three-year hiatus. We'll see what happens for the rest of the year.
