Derby, managed by Lampard, beat Leeds 4-2 in the second leg of their playoff semifinal on Thursday (NZT) and advanced 4-3 on aggregate.

Leeds took the lead in the second leg, at Elland Road, but in a topsy turvy brilliantly dramatic game Derby came back to win 4-2 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate, to grab their place in the final against Aston Villa.

Derby County players and manager Frank Lampard revealed that success against Leeds United in the Championship play-off semi final was made even better after the controversial spygate incident in January.

Jack Marriott came off the bench to score twice for Derby, including an 85th-minute victor in a pulsating encounter in which both teams were reduced to 10 men.

Leeds full-back Stuart Dallas also hit a double but his defensive colleagues malfunctioned after his opener, with Mason Mount on target and Harry Wilson converting a 58th-minute penalty before each team had a player sent off.

He cut in from the left and fired home a diagonal drive in the 62nd minute.

The game was filled with needless fouls and yellow cards, but a red card was brandished with 12 minutes remaining when Leeds' Gaetano Berardi lunged in on Bradley Johnson.

"The work rate through the year, players coming in, we're not there yet, I watched Villa do this [celebrate reaching the final], but the players deserve it".

Five minutes from time, Keogh played in Marriott for a delightful dinked finish and Derby held out despite Scott Malone's stoppage-time dismissal meaning a breathless encounter ended 10 versus 10. I'm really proud of my players, they badly wanted to give a good account of themselves. "Sometimes feelings can be wrong but when we got the first goal back the belief just began to rise", he said. I felt it was his night but I didn't know he'd do that. Lampard will face his longtime Chelsea teammate John Terry, who is an assistant coach with Aston Villa, in the play-off final.
