Liverpool's and Manchester United's hopes of signing young Netherlands International and Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt have been given a blow as reports suggest a move to FC Barcelona is nearly done.

Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt, who has been a shoe-in to join Barcelona all season, isn't so sure anymore that that is the right move for him this summer.

De Ligt has been a near certainty for a big money to move to one of Europe's top teams this summer, after thoroughly impressing for Ajax.

The Dutch global has been part of the Ajax team that stunned Europe by knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus in the Champions League before being heartbroken by Tottenham in the semi-finals. Liverpool and Manchester United were also interested in the player but reports suggest FC Barcelona and the player have agreed on terms.

According to the newspaper, the defender has now agreed figures on a deal with Barcelona.

Their thrilling European adventure, which also saw them dump out Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus, came to an end in gut-wrenching style last week when Lucas Moura's 96th-minute strike for Spurs saw Ajax throw away a 3-0 aggregate lead and miss out on a trip to Madrid on away goals.

Asked if he has played his final game for Ajax, De Ligt is quoted as saying by Metro: "I don't know yet".

If, as expected, Barcelona are successful in their pursuit of De Ligt, then the young defender would follow Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong across to Spain.

De ligt is now one of the best defenders in the world.

"There have been conversations, but there is still no agreement".
