Ex-Oregon football player stops gunman at school

According to Parkrose parents who spoke with the Oregonian, that the Parkrose faculty member who wrestled the suspected gunman to the ground is Keanon Lowe, Parkrose's football coach and a former star football player at the University of Oregon.

There are no other suspects. Investigators were still working to determine if any shots were fired during the incident. The Portland Police Bureau said in a statement Friday that no shots were fired and a suspect is in custody. "I'm happy I was able to be there for the kids and for the community". Officers responded to the school at 11:48 a.m. A firearm was recovered at the school, he added.

Parkrose Middle School was put on lockdown because of its proximity to the high school, but will continue with its regular class schedule today.

Students were bused from the school to a nearby rendezvous point to be picked up by their parents.

The outcome was "the best-case scenario, absolutely, " Yakots said. "The staff member did an excellent job by all accounts, (and) our officers arrived within minutes and went right in". Yakots did not identify who that faculty member was.

According to KATU, one student told his mother that the gunman was inside of the school, and entered his classroom. Police said the student had meant to harm himself.

"As I was running, I was just like, Lord, don't let this be it, " Pope told the newspaper. Lowe was a wide receiver for the Ducks between 2011 and 2014. According to a Parkrose High School Facebook post, the school is now in lockdown and all students are safe. Before that, he worked for his high school alma mater, Jesuit High, where he was a star athlete. Several also noted that the school's prom, scheduled for Saturday, was still on. Lowe averaged almost 15 yards a catch in 2014, the year OR went to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game and lost to Ohio State.
