Gareth Southgate named a 27-man squad on Thursday afternoon, which will be trimmed to 23 players for the beginning of the tournament in Portugal.

England have announced their 27-man squad for the forthcoming Nations League, with Harry Kane among the inclusions despite the fact he still recovering from injury.

Gareth Southgate believes his players will approach the UEFA Nations League Finals with determination to end the summer with a trophy. He's working to be fit for the (Champions League) final.

England play the Netherlands on the 6 June at the Estadio D. Afonso Henriques over in Portugal, with Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum likely to be in the opposing squad. But clearly he's a player we'd want to give every opportunity to.

"So no, I don't think it is an absolute he has to play in Madrid or he is not ready five days later". It's the biggest challenge of all to compete against each other, then leave that at the door and remember with England we are a team, we support each other. The beauty of the Champions League is the jeopardy of the away goals which means one mistake, one error one bit of brilliance can mean so much.

Southgate's policy in the build-up to last summer's World Cup was to select players who were fit and ready for the tournament in Russian Federation, rather than risk those who had been recovering from injury in the build-up to the finals, which had implications for players such as Adam Lallana.

And that is the case with Southgate's latest squad for the semi-final and, potentially, the final.

"It's a little bit larger than normal for obvious reasons, as we've got a few unknowns", he explained.

England can take just 22 players to the Finals, so there will be a cut-off at some stage, but with so many absences for the squad's first two training camps, Southgate believes it's the right approach.

Gareth Southgate has got "the fans behind England again" and increased competition in the squad, according to former Three Lions worldwide Shaun Wright-Phillips.

There is no place in the party for Manchester United's Player of the Year Luke Shaw, with Ben Chilwell and Rose taking the left-back slots while Delph offers further cover in that position.

England's Under-21s bid to win the European Championships at that age group level next month after reaching the finals in Italy and San Marino.
