According to her owners, Grumpy Cat had complications from a recent urinary tract infection and sadly passed away with her family by her side on Tuesday, May 14. Her uniquely unamused face quickly captured the attention of the internet, as people slapped captions on her photo, like "I had fun once".

Her owners made the announcement Friday morning, saying she had a urinary tract infection that became too tough for her to overcome.

The world is saying goodbye to one of the most popular animals of all-time: Grumpy Cat.

The news was broken by the official social media accounts of the cat. It's unclear if her genetic quirks played a role in her somewhat early death, but it's worth noting that research on domestic cats suggests the average lifespan of a house cat is anywhere from 13 to 17 years.

"We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat".

Rather than settling for a brief flash of internet fame, Bundsen managed to turn Grumpy Cat's celebrity into a thriving business. The unamused look was due to an underbite and feline dwarfism.

Grumpy Cat, whose original name was Tardar Sauce, went viral in 2012 after pictures of her expression were posted online.

By the time of her death this week, Grumpy Cat had amassed almost 4 million combined followers on Instagram and Twitter, with a Facebook page that boasts 8.5 million likes. She went on to appear on magazine covers, television advertisements and even starred in her own movie "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever".

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office lists several live patents filed for "Grumpy Cat", showing the wide range of products a meme can turn into, from action figures to paper products. Bryan Bundesen, the brother of Grumpy's owner Tabatha, posted the image, which was seen by more than 1million people within 48 hours.
