The franchise's official Twitter account dropped the news this morning, saying that the Flight of the Conchords actor will play Dr. Garvin, a marine biologist stationed on Pandora.

"I've loved Jemaine's work for years and I'm really pumped that he's joining our cast as Ian Garvin, one of my favorite characters", Cameron said in a statement.

Kiwi star Jemaine Clement has just landed a major role in Disney's upcoming slew of Avatar sequels. Stay tuned for further updates as they roll in, and feel free to head on down to the comments section if you've got anything to add to all this.

After some shuffling of the schedule, Avatar 2 has been pushed back a full year from December 18, 2020 to December 17, 2021.

Subsequently, the other sequels have moved to 2023, 2025 and 2027. Cameron initially envisioned two sequels, but after meeting with the screenwriters, artists and designers, realized he had too much material and extended his plans to four movies in total. Returning cast members include Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald and Sigourney Weaver.

The first Avatar was released in 2009 and became an all-time box office champion.

Clement created What We Do in the Shadows series based on the 2014 vampire feature mockumentary of the same name, which he wrote and directed with Taika Waititi.
