In the second semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest last night, the Latvian duo Carousel, performing its song That Night, failed to qualify for the competition's final. Earlier this week organisers said a contract had yet to be signed and that she could not perform without one. The vocalist is accompanied by an entourage of 135 people, including rapper KoVu, 40 backup singers, 25 backup dancers and a team of technical people, according to reports quoting Sylvan Adams, the Israeli Canadian billionaire allegedly sponsoring her performance.

Tourists thronged around food trucks and lay on sunbeds as live music blared throughout the Eurovision Village, a fan-dedicated area for the 41-nation song contest in Tel Aviv's Charles Clore Park.

A spokesman for the European Broadcasting Union confirmed the news to the press room at the Expo Tel Aviv before a projection of the star's Madame X logo appeared on the room's screens.

Her appearance has prompted calls from musicians including Pink Floyd's Roger Waters and pro-Palestinian activists from the BDS campaign for her to cancel her appearance. In 2018, the country missed the final for the first time in 14 years, after The Humans, the band representing the country, didn't manage to pass the semifinals.
