The PGA of America had to review his request to use the cart, which was approved due to his knee injury.

As SB Nation reports, "Daly's day began with a session on the range that could not have lasted much more than one cigarette". "It's to a point where it's nearly embarrassing. And the Yankees trousers I love it!" "There is no way I can walk it, but I feel like I belong to play because I am a past champion".

"It's not really ego, I just feel committed", he said. I enjoy playing and I'm still competitive.

John Daly of the United States drives his golf cart down the first fairway during a practice round prior to the 2019 PGA Championship at the Bethpage Black course on May 15, 2019 in Farmingdale, New York. He hasn't yet received an answer from The R&A.

"I was happy I played", Daly said after the round.

'Trust me, I hate riding in the cart, ' he said. It's probably the thickest rough I've ever seen. "I don't want to ride all the time, but if I don't, I won't be able to finish". "It got me started in my career".

"It's very awkward (to use a cart) and it's nearly to a point where it's embarrassing", Daly said. Doctors have told him he's too young to have knee replacement surgery, and warned him that the arthritis would return. "But they know I'm a true Cardinals fan", said Daly, an Arkansas native. "He's literally in pain. He's out there battling".

Playing at Long Island's Bethpage Black Course thanks to a medical exemption granted under the Americans With Disabilities Act and by virtue of his 1991 victory in the tournament, the two-time major victor delighted fans even as his arthritic knee appeared to cause him considerable discomfort.

Wearing loud New York Yankees-themed trousers and sucking on cigarettes throughout the day, the golf cult hero still drew a crowd, with mostly positive encouragement from fans along the gallery rope when he parked his cart in between shots.

Daly was also spotted smoking a cigarette while he hit a five-over-par round on Thursday.

"It's your world, John! We're just living in it, baby!"

This time, he had to park short of the green and lumber up the hill.

After his 5-over 75 on Thursday, Daly opened up about his feelings on using a cart and his "obligation" as a past victor to keep playing. "Do it! It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance".

Daly walked off the green and climbed back into the cart.

Daly drove to the greenside bunker, hit the sand wedge to within 2 feet and knocked it in for a bogey. He brings a big crowd following him.

"You got a DUI on that thing?" others hollered. He has not won on the PGA Tour since capturing the 2004 Buick Open. Daly routinely outdrove both of them, but he averaged only 289.6 yards, which is a far cry from his distance in the early 1990s, when he mesmerized golf fans with his booming drives. He averaged nearly two putts - and about one cigarette - per hole. PGA officials wouldn't allow him to carry rain gear or an umbrella in his cart - but he was able to have an extra-large cup from McDonald's and four cans of Diet Coke to refill it. "I just do", he said. That's awesome. You go, John.
