Correction: An earlier version misstated income changes from 2017 to 2018 at several properties President Donald Trump owns, including his hotel at the Old Post Office in Washington.

One of those defenders was Donald J. Trump.

He bemoaned light penalties that big-city prosecutors have given violent criminals and slammed those who cry wolf to the police - seemingly a reference to Jussie Smollett, the "Empire" actor accused by Chicago police of staging the well-publicized attack he reported in January. The President has reported making more than $80 million from the property since taking office.

As Trump's reported income dropped, his total assets increased to $1.72 billion, up from $1.66 billion a year ago. Disclosure forms filed with the Office of Government Ethics allow officials to cite many figures in ranges, rather than exact numbers - Trump's income from a piece of real estate on Wall Street and several others, for example, was "over $5,000,000".

I watched the Paikin interview again after the pardon, and come away inclined to agree with Black's friend and former employee, Jon Kay, who concludes that Black's admiration for Trump is genuine, because it is "entirely consistent with Black's other intellectual fixations"-a penchant for "the rehabilitation of autocratic historical figures", like Maurice Duplessis and Richard Nixon, strongmen about whom Black produced admiring biographies". The resort has evolved into a destination for Trump supporters and interest groups since Trump's election, including the Republican National Committee (RNC), Community Financial Services Association and private prison contractor GEO Group.

That's the good news for Trump.

Income from his golf resort in Bedminster, New Jersey, was up only slightly, to $15.73 million, an increase of more than $500,000 from the prior year.

The president's foreign-owned golf clubs have continued to generate substantial income.

The president brought in $75.9 million from his Doral Golf Course in Florida, according to a CNN report.

The Times reports Trump was expected to be called on to testify as a witness during Black's trial, but that his defense lawyers opted against it at the last minute.

Coincidentally, on Wednesday morning - just hours before the news of Trump's pardon became public - LifeSiteNews released the latest episode of The Van Maren Show, which just happened to be a pre-recorded interview with Lord Conrad Black. For example, Trump Doral in South Florida, one of his highest-income properties according to the report, provided a almost 2% bump in income previous year, up $1.2 million to $76 million.

Braun reported from Washington. The Trump campaign itself spends generously at Trump properties, spending millions through 2018 and shelling out $168,333 to Trump businesses to start 2019. For instance: His income was at least in the hundreds of millions a year ago.

Trump's sons opened a new Trump-branded golf course in Dubai in February 2017 and are exploring a second Dubai golf course, this time designed by legendary golfer and presidential medal of freedom recipient Tiger Woods. But it's also drawn lawsuits, including from Maryland and the District of Columbia, which claim Trump is in violation of a constitutional ban on accepting gifts from foreign and domestic governments.
