CDC says that measles cases in the USA surpass 1,000 this year

The Virginia Health Department issued an advisory Thursday, cautioning the public that they may have been exposed to a measles-infected child at Dulles International Airport on Sunday and in several other places in Northern Virginia a few days later. In fact, the US Department of Health and Human Services recently said that the number of measles cases in the US this year has surpassed 1,000.

Especially if you were at Dulles International Airport on June 2, 2019.

Measles is highly contagious.

In his statement, Azar noted that the CDC has implemented an internal management structure to respond to the outbreaks, created toolkits to address vaccine hesitancy, and reached out to rabbinical and other associations with credible vaccine information.

The second stage begins around the third to seventh day when a rash begins to appear on the face and spreads over the entire body.

"Before widespread use of the measles vaccine, an estimated 3 [million] to 4 million people got measles each year in the United States, along with an estimated 400 to 500 deaths and 48,000 hospitalizations", the release said. "One dose of measles-containing vaccine administered at age 12 months is approximately 93 percent effective and the effectiveness of two doses of measles-containing vaccine is greater than 97 percent".

According to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, adults born after 1957 who do not have evidence of immunity (either proof of measles vaccination or a titer showing that they are immune to measles) should receive one dose of a measles- containing vaccine, officials said. The agency also urged people with symptoms to call ahead to alert the staff that they could be infected with measles.
