Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross has told how her anal cancer - picked up during a routine gynaecologist visit - is linked to her husband's throat cancer diagnosis.

Cross is not ashamed to get candid about her health scare and hopes that by speaking out she can put an end to the stigma often associated with anal cancer.

She went on to say that there are "people who are ashamed" of the strain of the disease, but shouldn't be. You have cancer! You have to then also feel ashamed? I mean, come on, really. "There's enough on your plate", Marcia told CBS.

Marcia is now in remission but Tom went into remission only to have his cancer return 10 years later, and now doctors are suspecting that HPV was the cause of both cancers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that HPV, short for Human papillomavirus, is the cause of 90 percent of anal cancers.

'Even for me, it took a while, ' she said. "But you can bear it", Cross said. "You know, I kept saying, 'If this doesn't kill me, it's like the best thing that could have ever happened.' Because the experience of being loved like that ..."

Marcia Cross, 57, is revealing scary details about the possible cause of her anal cancer and she's doing it to raise awareness for others who can prevent it from happening to them. "Anus, anus, anus! You just have to get used to it".

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HPV, the human papillomavirus, is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the USA and affects around 79 million Americans.

She said: "My girls don't know it, but they're up for their first shot the end of the school year".

"I'm feeling back to normal though it's a new normal", she said. "I don't think I'll ever take it for granted".

Cross, who charmed audiences as perfectionist Bree Van de Kamp in Desperate Housewives, underwent six weeks of radiation therapy and two weeks of chemotherapy.

Statistically, anal cancer is on the rise. It's great what my body can do!

Cross is talking about her cancer battle to help destigmatize the disease.
