Poorly performing nursing homes list coming from Medicare

"Ensuring that families have all the information they need about a nursing home will improve the quality of care at facilities across the country", Toomey said in a statement. "In fact, we're just getting started".

Almost 400 facilities nationwide had a "persistent record of poor care" as of April, but they were not included along with a shorter list of homes that get increased federal scrutiny and do have warning labels, according to a Senate report released Monday. Bob Casey Jr., D-Scranton, and Pat Toomey, R-Lehigh Valley.

The Trump administration says it's already providing Americans more information on nursing homes and it's reviewing whether it can legally release the list.

Federal officials could soon begin releasing a previously undisclosed list of underperforming nursing homes targeted for potential inclusion in the Special Focus Facility program, SNN has learned. Suzanne Koenig, president of the company that now runs the nursing home, renamed the Heritage House Healthcare Centre, said she'd be concerned about releasing the list since "it doesn't really focus on what is going on in the facility". She was unsure how much would be allocated for the corrective program.

Although CMS compiles the wait list monthly, the agency has not made it publicly available.

Beth Martino, senior vice president of public affairs at AHCA, asserted that the information in the Casey-Toomey release wasn't new, and that families can use Nursing Home Compare for a full breakdown of any issues that an individual property may have. "Casey and Toomey on this important issue of nursing home quality", the spokesperson said. The number of facilities in the program is now capped at 88 - less than 1 percent of the nation's 15,000 nursing homes. The higher the star count, the better the quality of care.

Terrace Oaks was fined more than $130,000 in September 2017 after the state Department of Public Health's Division of Health Care Facilities found that the nursing home did not give morphine to a patient for 11 days, resulting in withdrawal symptoms, among other faults.

CMS responded by tweaking how it scores facilities, something Goodrich echoed Wednesday.

Consumers can identify special focus facilities on the government's Nursing Home Compare website by looking for an icon shaped like a small yellow triangle that resembles a traffic "caution" sign.

"When a family makes the hard decision to seek nursing home services for a loved one, they deserve to know if a facility under consideration suffers from systemic shortcomings", Toomey said in a statement Tuesday. "While the vast majority of nursing homes provide high-quality care, there are some that are consistently failing to meet objective standards of adequacy". The Senate report found the star ratings of candidate nursing homes did not always reflect their status.

These facilities represent the worst of the worst.

Among the four Pennsylvania homes on April's special focus facility list, only one is based in central Pennsylvania: The Gardens at West Shore in Camp Hill.
