The IAEA helps Member States to apply nuclear techniques in a wide range of environmental areas, including air quality monitoring. Air pollution creeps across borders and knows no national boundaries.

The risk is higher for girls with 9.6 out of 10,000 girls dying before five as a result of the high levels of air pollution.

"Ile, in a speech read and presented to Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Mr Samuel Numunengi, on behalf of Executive Director of SING, Idris Usman, said the theme of this year's celebration "Beat Air Pollution", was to raise serious awareness on the menacing trend of gas-flaring and other oil exploration activities in the Niger Delta region".

Ban Ki-moon, President and Chair, Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and former UN Secretary-General, remarked that air pollution can not be dealt with alone, and called on all nations to work in solidarity.

In celebrating this year's worldwide environment day, I urge be all of us, including the federal government, Rivers State Government and the local government Councils, citizens and companies to make a renewed commitment and take series of bold actions to end gas flaring, stop soot and kick out illegal artisanal refining of crude oil, otherwise called ' bunkering'.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force CP Marak said that by and large, the air quality in Meghalaya is good barring the two industrial areas of Umiam and Byrnihat. He highlighted that the report reflects progress on air quality achieved with government leadership, business participation and citizen inclusion, adding that, while significant progress has been made on reducing air pollution, there is still a "tremendous challenge" to be addressed.

In India, for example, the government launched its comprehensive action plan to clean up air quality in Agra, where the Taj Mahal monument is located.

She listed the interventions to include the institution of an e-waste management centre to stop the burning of e-waste, the introduction of a plastic waste policy to regulate the use and disposal of plastic waste and the introduction of vehicle emission testing and standards to curb vehicular air pollution.

And on World Environment Day simply appealed to the people to "live in harmony with nature".

It added the country's progress in renewable energy was "dismal". "We also must make conscious efforts not to contribute to air pollution", she said.
