Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mehmood Abbasi on Friday expressed firm resolve to ensure sustainable use of oceans and preserve marine resources with coordinated national efforts.

He said Pakistan Navy is playing a leading role in promoting safe and sustainable use of ocean resources.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the official observation of World Oceans Day-the UN General Assembly passed a resolution in 2008 officially recognizing June 8 as "World Oceans Day", effective the following year.

Legarda said that "Gender and the Ocean" is the focus of this year's World Oceans Day, while the message of Coral Triangle Day, a yearly celebration of the world's epicenter of marine biodiversity, which encompasses the seas of six countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Philippines, emphasizes ocean conservation under the banner of "shared waters, shared solutions". The ocean not only gives us life, but also provides for us a place to play, think, and learn.

Legarda said that, according to the United Nations, oceans absorb about 30% of carbon dioxide emissions produced by humans, mitigating the impacts of global warming. This offers an opportunity to explore the gender dimension of human relationship with the oceans. "While women constitute half of the workforce, they only comprise two percent of the seafarers' workforce and 38 percent of the overall marine scientists". The theme aims to raise gender literacy and promote gender equality, in ocean related activities such as marine scientific research, fisheries. labour at sea, as well as policy making. We also acknowledge the need for greater participation of women to address these challenges in a more sustainable manner. Some of the major PN initiatives include beach cleaning, construction of harbour debris collection barges, intensified Mangroves plantation, banning use of destructive fishing nets, tackling oil pollution at sea and coordination with industrial community to reduce waste dumping into the sea, he added. Another focal area being pursued by PN is the promotion of formal Maritime Education, especially for the women. "Let us not forget however that both women and men must take action to save our oceans and marine life and resources from further harm and degradation", Legarda concluded.

The aim of these activities is to come together and explore renewable energy alternatives and application of green technologies to keep our atmosphere clean and improve the quality of air that we breathe.
