David Ortiz underwent a second surgery in Boston.

Doctors removed David Ortiz's gallbladder and part of his intestine after the former Boston Red Sox slugger affectionately known as Big Papi was ambushed by a gunman at a bar in his native Dominican Republic, a spokesman said.

His wife said that Ortiz, who was reportedly recovering from organ damage as a result of the shooting, underwent a second surgery upon arriving at the hospital on Monday night and is in stable condition as of Tuesday morning. Lastly, I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and love that we have received during this incredibly hard time.

From former President Barack Obama: "Six years ago, David Ortiz's spirit and resolve helped us all begin to heal from the Boston Marathon bombing".

The gunman was captured and beaten by a crowd of people at the bar, and police were waiting for him to undergo treatment for his injuries before questioning him, authorities said.

The former player was also celebrated at Fenway Park with a moment of reflection before Monday's game. "He is a superhero without a cape", Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday. "That's the way we see it".

Ortiz's father, Enrique (Leo) Ortiz, told reporters late Sunday night that David Ortiz was out of surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, according to ESPN's Marly Rivera. "Ortiz is now in intensive care, but considered stable".

A man who allegedly confessed to playing a role in the shooting was identified by police as 25-year-old Eddy Feliz Garcia.

"We are lucky to have incredible journalists that we have collaborated with for many, many years in the Dominican Republic, in particular Dionisio Soldevila [a sports editor with Periodico Hoy, a newspaper in the Dominican Republic] and Ortiz's friend and business assistant, Leo López".

Ortiz is 17th in the all-time home run tables, having hit 541 in his 20-season career.

Jason Varitek, Ortiz's Red Sox teammate from 2003-11, held back tears while talking with the media here at Fenway Park on Monday.

Two others also were wounded in the attack. "But I'm so disappointed to know that someone like David, who saved so many lives, can have someone after his life".
