Just after South Africa lost to India by six wickets on June 6, news came out that de Villiers had wanted to come out of retirement for the World Cup but his last-ditch offer was rejected by South Africa's team management on the eve of the squad announcement.

Imran Tahir then bamboozled the West Indian batting with his leg-spin while grabbing 5-45 as South Africa equalled the then biggest win by runs - 257 - a World Cup record that lasted just six days when Australia annihilated debutants Afghanistan by 275 runs in Perth.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis insisted his troubled side could still turn their fortunes around.

Earlier, Windies skipper Jason Holder won the toss and elected to field against the Proteas.

But in the end, du Plessis was pleased he did not have to play in a shortened game, which would have favoured West Indies.

That said, by the latter stages of a five-hour rain delay, du Plessis - who had yet to get off the mark in the first seven deliveries of his innings - admitted that his team's desire to get back onto the field had been tempered by the fear that a rain-shortened contest would have played into the hands of their opponents. "I spoke to the coach and selectors the next day, and we all agreed it was too late to change the team".

Had Rabada had the opportunity, du Plessis thinks this his strike bowler and new-comer Beuran Hendricks could have helped defend a small total. "Like most of our batters, it's just a matter of getting in, and getting those starts converted into runs, because if you can get through the first 10-15 overs, that's when the scores come". [Shortage] favours the team that bats second. "There is more pace and bounce in the wicket, and the nature of it is that you lose wickets", Du Plessis said. The Proteas now needs to play fearless and attacking cricket. Take the learning out of it and make amends.

The teams thus shared a point each meaning South Africa finally opened their account on the points table but they remain winless after 4 games. "If you get that going, then other players can feed off their confidence".

"Every game for us is a must-win and the permutations are really too far away". "Right now, for us, we need to focus on our performance".

"We were looking forward to the game, especially the start that we had in the game", Reifer said afterwards.
