Root is only the second England batsman to notch two tons in the same World Cup after Kevin Pietersen, who reached three figures against Australia and West Indies in the Caribbean in 2007.

Mark Wood (3-18) finished off the innings when he bowled Shannon Gabriel with a yorker as the last four West Indies wickets fell for 10 runs. England are now second in the World Cup table with three wins and one defeat, one point behind New Zealand, while the West Indies have won one, lost two and had one no result in their four matches.

Morgan hobbled off the pitch in the 40th over, struggling to make his way up the pavilion steps and it was later confirmed he had suffered a back spasm.

Then, effectively two batsmen down following injuries to Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan, they only need four of their remaining nine as Root rose to the challenge of becoming England's emergency opener by strolling to an unbeaten 100. Jason Roy had a stiff hammy.

Expect a high scoring encounter between two teams that bat deep and have had a penchant - especially England - of posting big scores of late.

West Indies will be in a confident mood overall as they come into this match against hosts and tournament favourites England after they had South Africa on the ropes at 29/2 in a match that was eventually called off due to rain.

Andre Russell was on three when he was dropped in the outfield by Chris Woakes.

England eased through their run chase, though Bairstow endured a scary moment when he was smashed on the grille by a delivery from Russell - Bairstow was fit to continue but Russell, who had returned for West Indies after missing Monday's washout against South Africa with a knee issue, had to be helped from the field after falling in his follow through.

Gayle shared a 50-run second-wicket stand with Shai Hope (11) and surpassed Viv Richards' record of 1,619 career runs in ODIs against England when he stroked Woakes for a boundary. He took the first wicket in the third over and had Gayle dropped by Wood at third man when the West Indies star was on 15. He drove the next ball down the ground for six just for good measure.

Root was the unlikely partnership breaker when he pouched Hetmyer's tame drive and then also caught and bowled Holder in his follow-up over, Holder dismissed off a leading edge playing for non-existent turn.
