Murray expects U.S. Open to come too soon for singles return

Former world No.1 Andy Murray on Wednesday said he hoped to make a return to men's singles tennis later in the year.

But while Murray is targeting a return to the singles court, he admitted this is unlikely to be possible until after the US Open.

"With Feli, I was looking at guys to potentially play with in this tournament and ones I would be able to get in without taking a wild card from one of the other British grasscourt teams".

"[Against Tiafoe], I did a lot of the usual drills I would do if I am going to play singles but I didn't play a set with him".

"At this moment I've been progressing all of the time, at some stage it's probably going to plateau for a while before I'm able to kick on. I'm feeling good, pretty much pain-free and enjoying training, practising, improving all the time just now." he said.

ANDY MURRAY looks like he is holding nothing back as he reveals just how well his recovery from hip surgery is going with a practice session in front of the cameras at Queen's Club yesterday.

But Murray, who turned 32 last month, said he is in a rush to play singles again - and suggested it will not happen until after the US Open which ends on September 8. But if I played him here then I'd definitely be trying to win.

In the words of Bob Bryan - the doubles champion who underwent the same resurfacing operation at Murray last summer, and is now back to full power on the court - a best-of-five-set singles match is "almost close to 50 times more physical" than doubles. "I did first four shots in the rally, a couple more, but no extended rallies". "I practised with Tiafoe last week and at Wimbledon, and I have done some singles training drills with my coach". So, I have not played proper singles-wise yet.

"So not necessarily doubles specialists, but guys that if I was able to would be up for playing, but likewise if I'm not, they're fine as well". It's where I won my first ATP match, my first title in Britain and on grass, and it's been my most successful tournament overall.
