Contacted by AFP, FC Tokyo declined to comment, but Kubo's likely destination now looks to be Madrid, where he will start at Real's feeder club, according to widespread reports.

Japan's ascendant star playmaker Takefusa Kubo is set to depart FC Tokyo for a move to Spanish giant Real Madrid, sources close to the matter said Friday.

Madrid moved in ahead of Barcelona by signing Kubo, as the Catalans had him in their ranks as a youth but was one of the players that led to their 2014 Federation Internationale de Football Association sanction and he returned to Japan.

In a statement, Madrid said Kubo would play for their Castilla youth team in Spain's third tier next season.

Real Madrid have signed former Barcelona youth player Takefusa Kubo, the youngster known as the Japanese Messi, four years after their rivals had to release him.

Kubo is now training with the Japanese national side preparing the Copa America tournament in Brazil and has scored four goals in his last four J-League matches.

Another J League record was broken five months later when he became the league's youngest ever scorer aged 15 years and 10 months.

Turning 18 has meant he can officially move back to Europe.

Just days after making his national team debut against El Salvador in a pre-Copa America friendly, the 18-year-old has agreed terms with Real Madrid with details to be announced in the near future.
