And the top-ranked Americans did not hold back on the celebrations as they began defence of their world crown. "Obviously we have the utmost respect for everyone we play, but it's the World Cup".

The goal celebrations irritated some observers.

Kyle was one of three Canadians appearing as pundits on TSN to have blasted the defending world champions. I don't think they were overdoing it. "For me it's disrespectful, it's disgraceful".

Kyle said she was "disgusted" to see Morgan counting goals on her fingers, but the USA's record goalscorer Abby Wambach defended her former team. I know more than anyone how that feels, although the problem is that people don't know exactly what she is taking a stand against.

"It is a World Cup and you're going to take your opportunities and score those goals", said Scott, who has 144 caps for Canada.

I said the exact opposite IT'S THE WORLD CUP! But some critics contend the team could have been a bit more subdued given the score.

Co-Captain Alex Morgan told ESPN that "you can never have everyone love you", when asked about some of the critical comments leveled at her team for the on-field celebrations and the 13-0 drubbing. "Everyone is allowed there [sic] opinions towards my thoughts 100 per cent but please leave the death threats!"

Fellow TSN analyst Clare Rustad, a former worldwide with 45 Canada caps, and veteran Canadian midfielder Diana Matheson, who is missing the tournament through injury, also criticized the American behaviour while noting the importance of goal differential.

"I also think it was class of them to console the Thailand players after the game". If you think they over-celebrated, you should see me after I floss my teeth. It was the most goals ever scored in a World Cup, as well as the biggest margin of victory. Alex Morgan tied a national record with five goals in the match.

Morgan and her teammates were criticized not so much for running up the score - after all, a coach can remove only three players, the US team is programmed to attack constantly and goal differential is the first tiebreaker at the end of the group stage - but for their goal celebrations.

"This is a world championship so every team that is here has been fantastic to get to this point. But I think just be mindful of the other team".

Meanwhile, USWNT forward Alex Morgan, who scored five goals in the game, showed no fear on Twitter, proudly celebrating the team's historic win over Thailand.

She had become one of the strongest and most eloquent advocates for gender equality within both the US program and global circles. "And to play one of the best teams in the world, like the USA, this is also our success", Srathongvian said.

This is not the first time Solo has butted heads with the current USWNT, as she previously criticized Ellis, who coached her in the 2015 World Cup, on the "BBC Football Daily" podcast. Imagine it being you out there.

The Reggae Girlz were defunded by the Jamaican federation after they failed to qualify for the 2007 World Cup and 2008 Olympics.

However, as much as she is celebrated for her heroics with her national team, her career has been lined with controversy.
