Two men die in light aircraft crash in Kildare

The crash occurred at Belan, Moone, yesterday evening.

The two men were aged in their 50s and 70s.

However, the privately-owned plane involved was not located until shortly after 4.30am this morning when it was spotted by the Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116.

Two men have been killed after their light aircraft crashed near Athy in Co Kildare.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit has carried out its initial investigation of the aircraft at the scene.

Ireland's Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) said the aircraft was registered in the United Kingdom and was on a local flight from Kilrush Airfield on Thursday evening.

According to reports, the aircraft departed from Kilrush Airfield, Co Kildare on Thursday night and a search was launched after it failed to return.

"The two occupants have been fatally injured".

Investigators say its too early to say what may have caused the crash but they understand no distress signal had been sent by the aircraft.

"Two Inspectors of Air Accidents have deployed and have commenced an Investigation at the scene".
