The company has also revealed the names of several programmes that will be carried by the service, including all 236 episodes of the sitcom Friends on an exclusive basis.

The streamer will house series including Batwoman and Katy Keene from Warner Bros TV, which will debut on The CW and then be added to the U.S. network's own OTT platform.

A subscription price for HBO Max was not announced.

The HBO Max streaming service is scheduled to launch in spring 2020.

Netflix, in a comment on Twitter, said it was "sorry to see "Friends" go" at the beginning of 2020.

"Under the leadership of two of the strongest creative visionaries - Casey Bloys (HBO) and Kevin Reilly (original content and acquisitions) - and two of the most experienced digital experts - Tony Goncalves and Andy Forssell - I have no doubt they and their dedicated teams will deliver the world's best storytelling to audiences of all ages wherever and whenever they want it".

That portfolio includes programming from HBO, Warner Bros., New Line, DC, CNN, TNT, TBS, TruTV, The CW, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and more.

It has already ordered a raft of original series, including an adaptation based around Frank Herbert's novel Dune, true-life drama Tokyo Vice, and romantic comedy Love Life starring Anna Kendrick.

The streamer's launch comes at a time of huge competition in the streaming market, with Disney, NBCUniversal and Apple all preparing to enter a market that has to date been dominated by Amazon Prime and Netflix.
