After receiving backlash, the Queen rapper revealed on Tuesday that she's cancelling her performance in Saudi Arabia. Other announced performers include former One Direction British singer Liam Payne and American DJ Steve Aoki. The initiative has been created to reflect Jeddah's history and its potential for holidaymakers, as well as to help change stereotypes about Saudi Arabia in general.

Jeddah: Singer Nicki Minaj has withdrawn her attendance from the Jeddah Music Festival, where she was to headline a concert on 18 July. "The Human Rights Foundation is urging Payne to cancel his July 18 performance and use his global influence and platform in solidarity with the Saudi women's rights activists who are now in prison".

Nicki, in a statement on Tuesday, confirmed that she canceled the scheduled performance in Saudi Arabia next week in view of her support for the rights of women and the LGBT community.

Saudi Arabia is known for its regressive and misogynistic treatment of women and girls.

Meanwhile, the Saudi media had another take on the story.

Nicki Minaj attends the Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 6, 2019, in New York City.

The post amassed more than 15,000 comments within the first hour, as fans pleaded with the rapper to reconsider her decision. "Please do not compare Jamaica to Saudi Arabia", Twitter user Vanessa Williams said.

"We are grateful to Nicki Minaj for her inspiring and thoughtful decision to reject the Saudi regime's transparent attempt at using her for a public relations stunt", said Thor Halvorssen, president of the HR.

This comes at a time the ultraconservative Kingdom has been trying to loosen restrictions on entertainment under the claimed social reforms by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Saudi women are bound to an extremely conservative dress code.

In March, the kingdom drew further criticism when it put 10 women's rights activists on trial.
