- Philadelphia police say a carjacking suspect has died after he allegedly stole a auto with three children inside and was chased down by their parents Thursday night. ABC 6 Philadelphia noted that the mother could potentially face charges for leaving her kids in a running vehicle.

The mother's boyfriend is the father of two of the children.

At the same time, a 54-year-old man was outside and saw the woman leave the vehicle with the engine running. They pulled him out of the vehicle and he assaulted the father and tried to flee.

According to The Philadelphia Enquirer, police sources identified the alleged carjacker as as Eric Hood from North Philadelphia.

Other men joined in on the fight and eventually, the suspect was punched and kicked until he was unconscious. The auto thief only drove half a block before he became stuck in traffic.

The boyfriend, the father, pursued the vehicle on foot, and caught up with the thief and kidnapper about a block away in traffic. "And the boyfriend caught up to him and there was some sort of physical struggle that ensued", Small said. First responders arrived at the scene and took the auto thief to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. "It was at this time that a crowd of individuals stopped Mr. Hood and forced him to the ground", Philadelphia Police Homicide Captain Jason Smith said.

The couple who were questioned by police are both aged 25.

Cops are now waiting for the Medical Examiner's Office to determine Hood's cause of death.
