At least one flight, Eastern Airways flight E7601 from Southampton (SOU) to Leeds Bradford (LBA) diverted to Humberside (HUY) after holding in the LBA area for some time. Other flights have been placed on hold.

"We can now confirm that the airport is fully open and receiving flights again".

One reveller wrote: "So just about to take off when drone spotted so flight stopped!"

Malaga, Menorca and Alicante flights were among those affected.

While Leeds Bradford is a relatively smaller regional airport - the 15th busiest in the UK, according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority - the Friday afternoon delays came in the midst of peak summer travel season.

Flights into and out of the airport were halted for about 45 minutes.

The reports caused major disruption, affecting approximately 140,000 passengers and 1,000 flights.

Planes have been diverted and held from landing at Leeds Bradford Airport after reports of a drone sighting at the Old Ball in Horsforth.

One said: "Evacuated from the terminal at leeds Bradford airport".

About 140,000 passengers were caught up in the disruption as the runway at the UK's second busiest airport was closed for 33 hours between 19 and 21 December past year.

It remains unknown how many drones were senate the airport.
