The FCC authorized $47.5 million in funding to expand broadband services in 11 rural counties in Virginia.

Last fall, the Connect America Fund auction allocated almost $1.5 billion to expand broadband to more than 700,000 underserved rural homes and small businesses over the next decade. About 15,000 more rural Arkansas homes and businesses will be connected to the internet when the project is complete. Providers will start to get funding this month. The FCC authourized two waves of funding in May and June, and funds from those first two waves are expanding connectivity to almost 100,000 homes and businesses that lack service.

The FCC says it will authorize more funding in the coming months.

The FCC in general said it authourized over Dollars 524 million in funding over the next decade to expand broadband to 205,520 unserved rural homes and businesses in 23 states, representing the third wave of support from last year's Connect America Fund Phase II auction. "Today's authorization of funding is the largest yet from the auction, almost the double the amount authorized in the first two rounds nationwide, and serving over twice as many rural homes and businesses".

Numerous latest yield-maximizing and environmentally friendly farming and ranching techniques require broadband connections for data collection and analysis performed both on the farm and in remote data centers, American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall wrote in a letter past year urging lawmakers to support the Precision Agriculture Connectivity Act of 2018, which was ultimately incorporated into the 2018 farm bill to become law. Pai has also proposed the FCC roll out a Rural Digital Opportunity Fund, which would offer around $20.4 billion over 10 years to expand rural broadband. The FCC is scheduled to vote to establish the fund on August 1.
