In the southern state of Kerala at least 67 people were killed in rain-related incidents while 227,000 people were moved to some 1,551 relief camps.

At least 48 people have also lost their lives in neighboring Karnataka state.

Erosion caused by swirling waters of the flooded Chuflagad River also washed away two buildings on its banks.

The Indian Air Force rescued almost 125 people stranded on a road washed away by floods in Kutch on Monday, unidentified government officials said.

IMD has issued a red alert - rescue and rehabilitation mode - for Central states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and east Rajasthan, while "orange alert" has been issued for the southern state.

In Kozhikode district, 17 deaths have been reported and over 60,000 people shifted to 209 camps.

In states hit by floods, several roads were cleared on August 12, allowing partial movement of traffic, with priority being given to trucks carrying essential goods. "The Pune-Bengaluru National Highway-4 in Kolhapur's Shiroli area was closed for traffic movement following waterlogging on the route due to continuous rain in the region", informed Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Precaution is being maintained in the deluge-hit states as most rivers are in a spate and reservoirs are at the danger mark.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday visited flood affected areas in his Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala, including the worst-hit Puthumala area, and assured all help to those hit by the calamity to rebuild their lives.

Vijayan, during a review meeting with collectors through video conference, also asked district authorities to provide temporary lodging for those who had lost their houses, even after the relief camps are wound up. Many of them now live at 1,600 relief camps.

As the rains receded, rescue operations in affected areas have become smooth, he said, adding that the next major rescue task was to evacuate people from mudslide-prone areas. In Malappuram district, 45 people are still missing while seven have not been traced in Wayanad.

The humidity levels oscillated between 89 and 47 percent. The Safdarjung observatory recorded 0.2 mm rainfall till 8.30 am while Lodhi Road received 0.8 mm rainfall.
