Tumblr is set to be sold off for a knockdown price after owners Verizon opted to dispose of the social network to Wordpress owner Automattic for a reported fee of less than $3m. Verizon actually started seeking a buyer for the service earlier this year, and Automattic was one of the interested customers, along with...

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

It's a shocking drop in value, especially when you recall that Yahoo initially paid US$1.1 billion (~RM4.61 billion) for it back in 2013. The sale of the social media platform comes almost two years after Verizon's purchase of it from Yahoo back in 2017.

In a statement made up of words that definitely mean something, Verizon characterised its sale of Tumblr as "the culmination of a thoughtful, thorough and strategic process" and called Automattic "the flawless partner" which "will unlock new and exciting possibilities for Tumblr and its users".

Tumblr is getting a new owner. Automattic will carry on with the porn ban on Tumblr after the acquisition. The companies' announcement said the deal is "subject to customary closing conditions".

According to a recent post by Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg, the platform's new owner is "absolutely committed" to preserving 'the passion and sense of community that so many people around the world - and all over the web - have come to associate with Tumblr'. "It is an essential venue to share new ideas, cultures, and experiences, helping millions create and build communities around their shared interests". Automattic also plays a major role in maintaining WordPress.org, which is the free, open-source version of WordPress that's widely used by many websites on the internet to this date.
