Todd Chrisley and his wife, Julie, have been indicted by a federal grand jury for tax evasion, but the reality star is claiming he's innocent.

The 12-count indictment also charged the couple with wire fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and conspiracy to defraud the United States, the Associated Press reports.

"The allegations contained in the indictment are based on complete falsehoods". A woman who answered the phone at his office outside Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon said he was with a client and would have no comment.

The "Chrisley Knows Best" star took to Instagram on Monday to explain the situation in a lengthy text post accompanied by a picture of him and his family. Much of the series emphasizes Todd Chrisley's obsessive yet comedic efforts to keep tabs on three of his kids, two of whom are in their 20s, and his mother.

The series has aired on U.S. for seven seasons and recently premiered a spinoff called "Growing Up Chrisley", featuring his kids Chase and Savannah, who move to Los Angeles.

However, "Todd and Julie Chrisley allegedly did not timely file income tax returns for the 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 tax years or timely pay federal income taxes for any of those years", according to prosecutors.

Shortly after Todd released the statement, daughter Savannah Chrisley left a supportive comment.

A representative for NBCUniversal, which owns US, declined to comment. The family moved to the Nashville area a few years ago, but the criminal charges stem from when they lived in Atlanta's northern suburbs.

He continued, "As a result, it looks like later this week Julie and I are going to be named in a federal indictment charging us with tax evasion and probably a bunch over other financial crimes as well", he concluded.

Todd Chrisley claimed earlier this week, in a lengthy Instagram post (below), that the imminent indictment was born of a years-ago incident involving a disgruntled former employee who presented the USA attorney's office with allegedly fabricated documents indicating the couple had committed financial crimes.

"I'm telling you all this now because we have nothing to hide and have done nothing to be ashamed of", he said. "Not only do we know we've done nothing wrong, but we've got a ton of hard evidence and a bunch of corroborating witnesses that proves it". The Chrisley Knows Best stars' former accountant, Peter Tarantino, is reportedly facing the same charges. Pak said Chrisley "directed the falsifying or creation of false documents and directed Co-conspirator A to submit them" to banks. Pak said from at least 2007 to around 2012, the couple "conspired to defraud numerous banks" by giving the banks false information and faked bank statements while applying for loans. You have and always will be the glue that holds us all together. He then said he fired the unidentified person and took that person to court. "That money was hidden from the IRS".
