Universal has made a decision to scrap the release of The Hunt - an R-rated satire in which elites hunt "deplorables" for sport - following a series of mass shootings across the country.

As reported by Deadline yesterday, Universal Pictures made a decision to pull the film from theaters before its September 27 release shortly after halting the film's marketing campaign.

Universal Pictures has just released a statement confirming that The Hunt release has been canceled following the recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

In the past week, some companies have responded to mass shootings in Texas and OH by trying to reduce the amount of violent media and video games being shown to Americans.

On Saturday morning, prior to the movie's release being scrapped, the weekend hosts of Fox & Friends again discussed the film.

As reported by the Washington Post, comments Trump made on Saturday about Hollywood media, in which he said that an upcoming film is meant to "inflame and cause chaos", are most likely in reference to The Hunt.

But in a tweet Friday that appeared to refer to the film, Trump slammed it as "racist", fanning criticism from the right that its timing was particularly poor after recent mass shootings in the US.

I wrote here about the freaky movie The Hunt, in which liberal elites hunt and murder red state "deplorables". (Presumably at some point down the line, the fact that the movie was "too risky to be released in theaters" could actually be used as a selling point.) They could also sell the rights to distribute to the movie to another studio, or even a streaming service like Netflix, who might jump at the chance to have a hot-button title that's sure to garner headlines and plenty of viewers. "But Hollywood is really awful", Trump said. They don't know they've been chosen ... for a very specific objective... "What Hollywood is doing is a tremendous disservice to our country".

The Hunt's story, which finds wealthy human hunters pursuing less-privileged human prey, until the hunted gain an upper hand - mirrors that of the 1994 film Surviving the Game.

"At least the hunt's coming up".
