Just a month after reports surfaced that One Direction singer Harry Styles was in talks to play Prince Eric in Disney's live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, the singer has turned down the role. Now, we're not sure with all of this stands since the tweet was deleted.

On Tuesday, Popular theater chains AMC and Regal tweeted photos of Harry Styles claiming Disney had confirmed the musician to play Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid.

Sources say the initial reports about his casting were premature and that Styles made the decision to move on amicably.

First, Disney fan blog the DisInsider reported that Styles had been cast, which was not unexpected, after The Hollywood Reporter said last month that Styles was in "early negotiations" to play Ariel's love interest. Oscar victor Javier Bardem is in talks to play King Triton, while Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play the villainous Ursula.

For now, the cast of The Little Mermaid includes Halle Bailey, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, and Javier Bardem. Still, there has been no official comment from Disney or Styles' team. The upcoming film will incorporate original songs from the 1989 animated classic, as well as new tunes from original composer Alan Menken with lyrics by "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Behind the camera, Rob Marshall, director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Mary Poppins Returns, is helming The Little Mermaid, and David Magee, who wrote Mary Poppins Returns, penned the latest draft of the script. Kingsman co-writer Jane Goldman wrote an earlier draft.
