The Butte County infection is at least the 11th human case of the mosquito-borne virus this year across California, with the state West Nile virus website showing 10 prior human infections reported as of last Friday.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reports two new human case of West Nile virus for 2019, bringing the state total to five this year.

Since July there have also been positive mosquito samples collected in Bucks County as well as in Berks and DE counties.

The three human cases to date have been reported in Golden Valley...

The El Paso Department of Public Health reported that an adult resident of El Paso County tested positive for the disease in July. Many people exposed to the virus don't get sick, but about 20 percent develop symptoms.

Common symptoms of West Nile include fever, nauseam headaches and muscle aches, the health department said. In rare instances, the virus can also cause encephalitis and meningitis and can be fatal.

The number of cases of West Nile Virus has tripled in North Dakota in recent weeks - but that's not saying much.

"Severe illness can occur in people of any age; however, people over 60 years of age are at greater risk", the CDC says.

Health experts warn to wear insect repellent, to avoid exposure to the insects during dawn and dusk and to drain any standing water, which is where mosquitoes lay their eggs.

Use window and door screens and fix any holes in screens to help keep mosquitoes outside.
