Farmers affected by mental health issues urged to seek help

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan, who lost a sister to suicide, said it was outrageous it has taken so long to publish the strategy, which comes on World Suicide Prevention Day.

The intervention that has the most imminent potential to bring down the number of suicides is restricting access to pesticides that are used for self-poisoning, the World Health Organization pointed out. Depression was the leading cause for attempting suicide.

This day is dedicated to raise awareness and advance education regarding suicide and its increase in different countries. The most common methods of suicide are hanging, gunshots and - especially in rural areas - the ingestion of poisonous pesticides.

The strategy aims to dispel the myths around suicide, including the suggestion that most happen suddenly and without warning.

In a release on Monday, Weekes said the media were a key player in suicide prevention, as the way in which suicides are reported can either encourage or discourage people who are contemplating suicide.

"We must remember that every life lost represents someone's partner, child, parent, friend or colleague".

He added that everyone can make a contribution in preventing suicide and believes that it is by joining together, those suffering can be better supported.

According to statistics from the Police Department of Investigation and Planning, the number of suicides in the West Bank a year ago increased to 25, compared to 22 cases reported in 2017.

In the western Pacific, rates fell by almost 20%, while in Guyana the rate topped more than 30 per 100,000, making it the highest in the world. Similar initiatives in other parts of the world have seen significant decreases in suicide rates.

A total of 800,000 people die by suicide each year on average, according to the new report. The high toxicity of many pesticides means that such suicide attempts often lead to death, particularly in situations where there is no antidote or where there are no medical facilities nearby.
