"A general election might well fail to solve this Brexit chaos".

"Only Boris Johnson and the Conservatives will deliver Brexit by 31 October, no ifs or buts, so we can move on and focus on the issues that matter to people - investing in the NHS, reducing violent crime and cutting the cost of living".

Fran Heathcote, president of the PCS union, said: 'We will call on the TUC to organise a demonstration to demand a general election if one isn't forthcoming.

'I want an election, I want it as soon as we possibly can and sometimes you do have to put your country before party, ' he said.

"We have witnessed a deliberate, decades-long transfer of power away from working people".

Mr Serwotka, who is TUC president this year, told the conference floor: 'Let the cry go out: we have no confidence in this rotten government and we want a general election on our terms now.

"Rights only mean anything if they're enforced".

Corbyn later met leaders of the key Labour-affiliated unions, and agreed the party should stick to its policy of backing a referendum, but ensuring they have something to offer leave supporters. I think Jeremy Corbyn and the people around him have turned what was a mainstream political party into something very different.

He will promise that MPs won't be "silenced" by Johnson's decision to prorogue parliament.

"Prime minister: you can hide from parliament for a few weeks, but when we return we will be ready", Starmer will say.

Telling the house he wanted to discuss politicians obeying the rule of law in a speech that was persistently and angrily shouted down by his former Labour colleagues - with no attempt at intervention from the speaker - Mr Austin emphasised his feeling that it was hypocritical, given the past behaviour of members of the Labour leadership team, that they should lecture the Prime Minister on being lawful. Now Labour insists there should only be a vote if the number of potential outcomes are limited, preventing the British people from voting in a government the Labour leadership considers unacceptable. It may be ancient history to some of Labour's young new recruits, but many people will never forget how they supported terrorists responsible for horrific carnage in a brutal civil war which saw people blown up in pubs, hotels, and shopping centres.

"The vast majority in the Labour heartlands voted Brexit".

There was disquiet among some around Corbyn that the chaotic events of the past week in parliament risked allowing Johnson to present the Labour leader as part of a Westminster cabal, trying to block Brexit. We've got to defeat Boris Johnson at that election'.

He will say: "The only way to break the Brexit deadlock once and for all is a public vote in a referendum".

McDonnell suggested on Sunday the party would not seek to open lengthy negotiations with Brussels, but would be hoping to rubber-stamp something like Theresa May's deal, with the addition of the compromises Labour had secured during the cross-party talks earlier this year. The consequences are stark for all workers, whether members of a trade union or not.
