United States should avoid 'warmongers', says Iran on John Bolton's sacking

Bolton had told the president that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro could be quickly ousted following the US imposition of economic sanctions on the country's state oil company.

Legacy: While Bolton influenced a shift toward using financial and military pressure around the globe at the National Security Council, former administration officials said he was unable to build a policy process that aligned with Trump.

The US has followed what Tehran calls a policy of "maximum pressure", including sanctions aimed at halting Iranian oil exports, saying its ultimate aim is to push Tehran for talks on a new, tougher deal.

Pompeo, standing alongside Mnuchin in the White House, said "sure" when asked whether Trump could meet Rouhani later this month at the United Nations General Assembly in NY.

Netanyahu, waving off commentators who deemed Bolton's departure a blow to him and to Israel, cited new U.S. sanctions against Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps that were announced shortly after Trump tweeted about Bolton's departure.

Toossi said Washington "greatly undermined its credibility" when Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal unilaterally, making it hard for Iranian leaders to trust the US. In that sense, Bolton somewhat fit the role.

What's next: American Conservative Magazine is reporting that US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun, retired Army Col. Douglas MacGregor, US Iran envoy Brian Hook and others are already being floated for the job.

Bolton was critical of any potential talks between Trump and leaders of Iran and had persuaded Trump to keep US forces in Syria to counter the Iranian influence in the region.

Middle East Forum president Daniel Pipes echoed Brodsky: "I doubt that Bolton's leaving has major implications for the U.S. -Israel relationship, which seems to be primarily under the influence of Jared Kushner".

The departure of Mr Bolton removes one of the strongest advocates of a hard line towards Iran from President Donald Trump's White House and raises the prospect of steps to open up negotiations after more than a year of escalating tension.

"I would say Secretary Pompeo and myself and the president are completely aligned on our maximum pressure campaign". During Trump's second summit with Kim in Hanoi, Trump ordered that Bolton not be included in a dinner meeting with senior US and North Korean officials.

A potential summit between Trump and the Iranian leadership sparked interest from the mogul-turned-president, but it is adamantly opposed by Netanyahu, who faces elections next week and sees Iran as an existential threat. But it was the straw that broke the camel's back between him and Bolton.

Four sources with knowledge of the U.S. president's conversations with French President Emmanuel Macron told the news outlet that Trump "has in recent weeks shown openness to entertaining" the proposal.

Rouhani has had a series of phone conversations in recent weeks with Macron. He invited Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif to attend sideline meetings at the G-7 conference in August. The president chose not to strike Iran.

"From the point of view of the Iranian government, parliament and people, negotiating with the United States under sanctions is pointless", Rouhani said in a readout of a phone call with President Macron on Wednesday, according to Iranian press.

In June, following Trump's decision not to order a military attack on Iran after it downed an unmanned USA drone, Bolton was "devastated", said one US official familiar with the matter. Easing sanctions could conceivably smoothen the path for a meeting. I thought Bolton was a terrific choice for national security advisor because he saw the world for how it was-not how he wished it would be. But for Trump, the upsides are also significant.

"The French are offering Trump a facing-saving way out of a mess of his creation".

Trump has suggested he would be willing to hold talks with Iran to reach a new deal.

Moreover, in political terms, there are incentives for Trump to chart a new course.

Still, there is a long way to go in a very short period of time. The UN meeting is less than two weeks away.
