The facts: This 10 million number has come up in past debates as a dig against Biden's plan.

"This is America", said Biden, his party's early front-runner, before calling Sanders "a socialist". "That's the big difference - I'm fulfilling the legacy of Barack Obama and you're not". The candidates are looking for a chance to differentiate themselves from the pack. Amy Klobuchar, New Jersey Sen. Former Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) endorsed a Medicare buy-in, without picking up any flack from his competitors.

California Senator Kamala Harris, for example, used the fighting that erupted around her as an opportunity to cast herself as a unifying candidate who could simply beat Trump. As her rivals bickered over their personal flavors of health care reform, Harris interjected, trying to put the focus back on Trump.

Biden and Warren have been dueling each other in several recent polls, and since this will be their first time on stage together, the debate is likely to shed some light on how much of a progressive agenda the Democrats are going to run with in the 2020 presidential election.

The debate is shaped by evolving issues of race, gender, generation and ideology that again exploded into public view on the debate stage Thursday night.

Former CIA counterterrorism officer Dan Gabriel breaks down former Vice President Joe Biden's troubling record on Iraq.

The top Democratic presidential hopefuls will be going head-to-head on the debate stage in Houston Thursday night.

"They do not have to buy in", Biden replied.

Viewers took notice, too, seeing it as an attack on the former vice president's age and memory. At 76, Biden would be the oldest president ever elected to a first term.

Castro's comment wasn't accurate, as Biden, just minutes before stated: "Anyone who can't afford it gets automatically enrolled in the Medicare-type option we have". Castro asked. "I can't believe that you said two minutes ago that you have to buy in and now you're forgetting that".

Later, during a discussion about deportations under the Obama administration, Castro mocked Biden for clinging to former President Barack Obama, but then saying he was only vice president when Obama's conduct was questioned. Elizabeth Warren of MA, quickly made good on that promise by attempting to distance her from Obama, who remains one of the most popular figures in the Democratic Party.

The debate, held on the campus of historically black Texas Southern University, includes women, people of color and a gay man, a striking contrast to the Republicans.

In the second tier are candidates who have had a moment in the spotlight, but since lost some luster.

Meanwhile, Trump noted he'd be in Baltimore at a Republican retreat during the debate and wasn't sure he'd get a chance to watch. But that hardly made the debate any less feisty or chaotic than the previous two rounds, which left political observers and voters anxious that intraparty acrimony could distract Democrats from their ultimate goal of defeating President Trump.

The leading Democratic candidates may not have another chance to face off for quite some time.

"It's exciting to have a narrowed down group of candidates".
