Look up: Tonight's Sky Will Reveal a Harvest (and Micro!) Moon

Pending any weather developments, the full moon should be visible every night until Sunday morning.

The spring full moon (in the southern hemisphere) is known as a harvest moon in the northern hemisphere, where it is nearly autumn.

It's like the opposite of a supermoon. The next full moon to fall on a Friday the 13th is not expected until August 2049.

November's is called the Full Beaver Moon, which the Old Farmer's Almanac says is named for a time to set beaver traps before swamps froze. This iteration will appear 14 percent smaller than February's spectacularly large supermoon, according to Farmers' Almanac, because it will have almost reached apogee, meaning the moon's farthest point of orbit - 252,100 miles - from Earth. "The Moon was more than 30,000 miles closer and was accordingly branded a 'Supermoon".

The Harvest Moon is expected to light up the sky on this Friday the 13th, but with rain in the forecast, Metro Vancouver sky watchers probably won't be able to see it. The last one was on October 13th, 2000, almost 20 years ago, and we won't see another for about 30 years, on August 13th, 2049.

Despite the fact that in case everyone is being technical, it'll really be on Saturday 14th as it'll hit the peak at about 5.30am BST.

Like a premature Jack O' Lantern in the sky, the harvest moon's brightness and orange/yellow/red hues are merely a trick of the eye. It happens when the moon is situated on the opposite side of Earth from the sun, completely enlightening it.

The Harvest Moon occurs annually near the autumnal equinox and is known for its orange-red colouring.

The Harvest Moon does typically occur in September, taking the place of the Full Corn Moon.

Though it's not clear if the title originated in North America or Europe, it alerts the beginning of a brand new season - the onset of autumn. The next full moon after the Harvest Moon is the Hunters Moon which will happen on October 13.
