The second seed saved five set points in the opening set against Belgium's Goffin on his way to a 7-6 (7), 6-4 victory.

The 23-year-old Medvedev, who has lifted three titles in a breakthrough 2019, beat Greece's Tsitsipas 7-6 (7/5), 7-5.

Zverev, who received plenty of coaching and words of encouragement from Federer when the pair teamed up at the Laver Cup, added: "Emotions in sport are great, I didn't know what was happening with the umpire, I didn't pay close attention".

"He has a very different tennis from most of the players that I have been playing against this year", said Tsitsipas. Medvedev seems to be playing with huge amounts of confidence and I see him as the favorite to win this tournament.

Djokovic had been 8-0 in quarterfinal matches at the Shanghai Masters, and won four titles. Federer had been 5-0.

After the match, Federer dismissed a question about the penalty after saying his last point deduction was a "long, long time ago".

"So you can write on Twitter you mean?" he said in response to a reporter's question. "It would be nice to write something nice once also about the game..."

"They're knocking on the door big time", said Federer. "It's exciting. They're great".

Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Medvedev, Thiem and Tsitsipas have booked their places for the ATP Finals, with two spots still up for grabs for the tournament in London.

So, Tsitsipas and Zverev join the two straight-set victors, Daniil Medvedev and Matteo Berrettini, in the semi-finals to complete a quartet of "next-gen" players remaining in the draw, with Saturday's semi-finals getting underway at 930 United Kingdom time.

One victory away from reaching a sixth straight final.

Asked if someone else other than Federer, Nadal or Djokovic can finally win a Grand Slam next year, he said: "I think so, to be honest".

Tsitsipas smacked the ball out the court in a rage, before Medvedev sealed match in the 12th game of the second set. The only time he lost a hard-court match after winning the first set was against Gael Monfils in Rotterdam.

"If some top players like Fabio can say this about me, shows that I'm on the good way, I'm playing good, and it's not easy to play against me", Medvedev said. "So I'm happy to be in the semifinals now and give myself the best chance to win maybe two more matches here".
