At least four people died and several others were injured in a shooting early Saturday at a private social club in New York, US media agency NBC New York reported. They said the evidence suggests that about 15 shots were fired inside the club, which they believe was unlicensed.

"We have some individuals back at the 77th precinct and we're trying to piece together exactly what transpired", Shea said, adding that police are continuing to investigate, are canvassing the neighborhood, and are reviewing body cam footage.

Police tape secures a crime scene outside a club after a shooting in Brooklyn on October 12.

The victims, who have not been identified, ranged in age from 32 to 49, Shea said at a briefing near the shooting.

The six men and one woman were reportedly shot just before 7a.m. inside a building in the Crown Heights neighbourhood of Brooklyn.

Shootings are up 42.9 percent in the 77th Precinct as of October 6. "Gov. Cuomo and New York State have done a lot to prevent and reduce gun violence, but it is clear there is more work to do at the community level and beyond". Previous year it had fewer than 300 in a city of more than 8.5 million people.

Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio, in a message posted on Twitter, said the city "awoke to senseless gun violence".

The vigil shooting came a week after a mass shooting at a annual block party in Brownsville left one person dead and 11 others injured.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
