The Windsor plant now employs over 4,600 workers, FCA employs over 9,000 in the province and Unifor has over 20,000 auto industry members in Canada.

Under the deal, Fiat Chrysler's investment would outfit the factory to assemble plug-in hybrids and battery-powered vehicles, with at least one new model in 2025, he added.

Ratification meetings for the FCA deal will happen over the weekend, and members will vote on whether to accept the agreement on Sunday.

"The lion's share of (the investment) will be coming from Fiat Chrysler", Dias said.

Earlier this year, the Windsor plant lost its third shift causing 1,500 workers to be laid off.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA) has committed to a multi-year investment in assembling electric vehicles in Canada and to add up to 2,000 new jobs, a union representing some of the carmaker's workers announced Thursday.

Dias called the tentative deal with Fiat Chrysler "probably about the best economic agreement we've put together in 20 to 25 years", noting that it includes a significant signing bonus, wage increases and a return of shift premiums.

The negotiations between Fiat Chrysler and Unifor came after the union reached a deal last month with Ford Motor Co., creating a template for talks with the other Detroit automakers.

The Ford deal for in Oakville, meanwhile, will see the plant transition to a battery electric vehicle facility in 2024 with five new EVs being produced by 2028.

Unifor represents 9,000 Canadian autoworkers at FCA.

"Those products will lead to the recall of over 100 members at the Etobicoke casting plant", said Dias.

Unifor is then expected to begin negotiations with General Motors' Canadian division next week.

Also included in the new agreement with FCA is a commitment for a $50 million investment in the company's Brampton assembly plant, which the union says will "extend the life" of Chrysler 300 production and introduce "multiple derivatives" of the Dodge Charger and Challenger that are built there.

FCA will be supplying the majority of the financial investment, but Dias said the company is still in talks with both the province and Ottawa for some financial support.

Unifor, Canada's biggest private-sector union, announced its tentative three-year agreement with Fiat Chrysler late Wednesday, just ahead of a midnight strike deadline.

FCA Canada said only that it has reached a tentative agreement with Unifor on a new contract.
