Ontario reporter another 712 cases of COVID-19 on Friday as the number of people in Ontario hospitals with confirmed cases of the illness continued its slow but steady climb.

In a breakdown of cases by age group, the province has indicated 51 per cent of the cases reported today are individuals under the age of 40.

Cases in Saskatchewan nearly doubled in less than a week.

It was the eighth straight day Ontario topped its first record high of 640 new infections on April 24 at the peak of the first wave.

"A lockdown has to be on the table".

Horwath said any new regulations should be announced quickly because the health of patrons and staff at fitness facilities is at stake.

"But if you're going to tell people you can't work, if you're going to tell people you have to close your business, government has a responsibility to make sure that those people don't go broke and that business doesn't go under", he added.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says 239 of the new cases are in Toronto, 136 are in Peel Region, 127 are in York Region and 89 are in Ottawa.

Ontario completed almost 40,000 tests on Wednesday.
