He made the comments as Mr Burnham called for Tier 3 restrictions to come with an adequate financial package and accused Prime Minister Boris Johnson of exaggerating the severity of the coronavirus situation in the region.

Michael Gove has accused Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham of "posturing" and "political positioning" in refusing to accept strict new COVID-19 restrictions.

Senior minister Mr Gove told Sky's Sophy Ridge On Sunday: "I want to reach an agreement with the political leadership in Greater Manchester".

"Instead of press conferences and posturing what we need is action to save people's lives".

"We think in the long run that will be more effective, more quickly than this constant patchwork of, as you say, checking in and then never being able to check out of local restrictions that people don't understand and where already we can see they are not proving effective".

"That's why I'll be writing to the Labour Party leaders in Westminster to ask them to intervene, for Parliament to intervene, here", Mr Burnham told Marr.
