The president himself referred to as Fauci an "alarmist" throughout an interview with Chris Wallace on "Fox Information Sunday".

During his tenure, he's won support and praise from both Republican and Democratic politicians, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

The doctor has said that an early recommendation about not wearing a mask was because there was a shortage of personal protective equipment for health professionals at the time.

'And look at all the masks, ' Trump told his Greenville, North Carolina audience Thursday.

'It's not providing the ideal protection that people think that it is. "Then he said, 'Do not wear a mask, do not wear a mask under any circumstances". 'They keep saying nobody wears masks'.

More recently, Trump has parroted a version of that line when asked about his resistance to mask-wearing. "Particularly when members of the family might be at a risk because of their age or their underlying condition". 'They keep saying nobody wears masks'.

Fauci today called a herd immunity proposal being embraced by the White House "total nonsense".

It's not clear if prior COVID-19 infection confers long-term immunity to the disease.

As for Trump's promise that the Regeneron antibody cocktail will be made available to all Americans who need it, Fauci said that's not yet feasible because there aren't enough doses to go around.

"I, and one of my colleagues who's very experienced in this, Dr. Cliff Lane, came to the conclusion - I think certainly correctly - that he is of no threat to transmit the virus to anybody else", Fauci told O'Donnell.

As for yourself, do everything you can to prevent getting-and spreading-COVID-19 in the first place: Mask, get tested if you think you have coronavirus, avoid crowds (and bars, and house parties), practice social distancing, only run essential errands, wash your hands regularly, disinfect frequently touched surfaces, and to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.

"So this idea that we have the power to protect the vulnerable is total nonsense because history has shown that that's not the case". "Are there vulnerable people? So I think that we just got to look that square in the eye and say it's nonsense", he said.
