Zverev got two set points at 5-6 15-40 but Davidovich Fokina was up to the task at saving both as the German number one seed hit two unforced errors in a row.

Auger-Aliassime, 20, overcame second seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the semi-final but failed to repeat his performance against Zverev.

"I've practiced with him many times back home".

Andrey Rublev boosted his hopes of reaching the ATP Finals as he came from behind to defeat Denis Shapovalov, setting up a St Petersburg Open final with Borna Coric. Hopefully tomorrow I can give myself chances to win.

"We've already played twice and for sure it's the start of our careers and we're going to play many times".

Bautista Agut is playing his second semifinals of the season after reaching the last four in Cincinnati, where he fell to Novak Djokovic.

He saved five of six break points in the process of earning victory over the Canadian, the win moving Rublev ahead of Diego Schwartzman into eighth place in the battle to qualify for the season-ending tournament in London.

Davidovich Fokina would save the breakpoint with an incredible volley victor but the number one seed would not be denied and broke at the third time of asking to take a 3-1 lead. "Both of us deserved to win". However, he is not enjoying a great record in the ATP finals.

It was the sixth loss in the ATP finals for the young Canadian from as many title matches, still seeking the first ATP trophy after finishing on the losing side in all three indoor hard title matches in 2020.

The Croatian defeated 2015 champion Milos Raonic 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 in his semi-final.
