Teofimo Lopez shocked the world on Saturday night, defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko by unanimous decision to become undisputed lightweight champion.

The 23-year-old outpointed Vasiliy Lomachenko in a unanimous decision win that had him up on the judges' scorecards 116-112, 119-109 and 117-111 in Las Vegas.

Lopez looked the stronger fighter through the first half of the fight after starting far faster, and sharper, than Lomachenko, who came back into the sort of form we're used to seeing from him later in the fight. (16-0, 12 KO's) took home the WBA (Super), WBO, IBF and The Ring lightweight titles.

The heated confrontation compelled Lopez Sr to promise that his son would knock Lomachenko (14-2, 10 KOs) off his perch in due time. "I gotta dig in deep". But the rounds appeared to go back and forth as the fight progressed.

"That's a true champion right there", the younger Lopez said. And each and every day, I take that in. Lopez finished strongly for the win, but it's hard to believe that he won 11 out of 12 rounds, as Lederman saw things.

"I'm a fighter", Lopez said after the fight regarding the 12th round.

It also earned him plaudits from fellow Brooklyn native Mike Tyson, with the legendary former world heavyweight champion tweeting his approval following Lopez's victory. At the end of the clash, "The Takeover" Teofimo Lopez was the better man.

Punch statistics showed Lopez landed 183 of 659 punches while Lomachenko was credited with 141 of 321.

Lomachenko, who lost only once in almost 400 amateur fights and had only one loss as a pro, thought he did better than the scorecards indicated.

The contract for the fight promoted by Top Rank and broadcast on ESPN did not include a rematch clause, per Lomachenko's terms as the three-belt champion, thus leaving the two-time Olympic gold medalist at the mercy of Lopez and his team as to whether they would face one another again.

Lopez rocks Lomachenko with an uppercut.

Haney issued a challenge to Lopez via his Twitter page shortly after the fight, as did Ryan Garcia, another standout in the lightweight division. I'm thankful. I'm grateful. "But I am not going to argue it now".
