The Reds have been dealt a major blow after discovering that their imperious defender needs surgery following yesterday's Merseyside derby.

Van Dijk was the subject of a reckless lunge by Pickford in the sixth minute of the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Van Dijk was able to walk off the field but a further assessment on the injury has revealed an operation will be needed.

The Reds boss opted not to sign a replacement when Dejan Lovren moved to Zenit St Petersburg in the summer, insisting midfielder Fabinho could fill in at the back - and he has done already this season. He told Sky Sports: "I think it's blown the title race wide open".

The hope is that the Dutchman's absence from the Liverpool team isn't as long as now feared, but there is no confirmation either way yet.

Although Van Dijk was able to walk off the pitch following lengthy treatment, sources have told ESPN that Liverpool are concerned by the extent of the injury and are determined to get a clear diagnosis by sending the Netherlands worldwide to see a consultant on Sunday.

"The two they have got now [Joe Gomez and Joel Matip] are very injury prone. It was not our day but the performance was the performance I wanted to see", said Jurgen Klopp after the game.

"I know the transfer window has just finished by they have to be ready on January 1 to bring someone in".

The club has confirmed that Van Dijk requires surgery and due to the nature of the injury, there are fears that he may not be involved again this season.

The sidelining of Van Dijk is compounded by the absence of goalkeeper Alisson Becker with a shoulder injury.

"No specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage".
